Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Do I need a guitar to take guitar lessons? Question: How often and long are lesson? Question: Do you offer group lessons? Question: What ages do you teach? Question: What kind of guitar should I buy? Question: What is your background as a teacher? Answer: I knew I wanted to teach since I was eleven years old. I bagan formal lessons at the age of seven and continued playing, majoring in music receiving a Bachelors of Music in performance and pedagogy and a Masters of Music. I started teaching at the age of sixteen at Don Lesmen's Music Store in Albuquerque New Mexico. I have been teaching for 38 years and it has been my life's joy to do this professionally. I also teach at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood Colorado where I began in 1997. I head the classical guitar department and I teach music business classes at CCU. Question: How much should I (or my child) practice? Answer: It depends on the age and experience of each student. With children, I encourage about 10 minutes a day. Much more than this will cause pain to their finger tips. Adults often practice around 30 minutes a day to begin, gradually increasing with ability and enthusiasm. Question: What styles do you teach? Answer: I teach students fingerpicking, classical, chords, reading music, rhythms and I give a strong foundation from which they can build. If students wish to sing with the guitar, I can teach them how to do so. I do not teach jazz or rock styles since I am not trained in that area.
